Cardboard Gods: Tom Paciorek Post Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2008 14:12:00 PST
I Walk the (Mendoza) Line (continued from Bill Plummer) Chapter Two Thanks in part to Tom Paciorek, there's a term for the borderline between just barely getting by and not getting by at all. Some say Paciorek coined this term, but Paciorek himself claims that he heard the termwhich alluded to the .200 batting average that a Mariner teammate always seemed to be either just above or just belowfrom a third Mariner, Bruce Bochte. Either way it seems to have been Paciorek, a gregarious type, who started spreadingthe term around, most significantly passing it along to Royals third baseman George Brett, who shared it with ESPN's Chris Berman, who carried news of The Mendoza Line to the rest of the world.Oddly enough, this seems to have transpired in 1980, the year Brett ended up making the most serious charge toward a .400 batting average since the last time the legendary mark was actually reached, in 1941 by Ted Williams.

As <a href="http://sports-law.blogspot.com/2008/08/executive-compensation-and-professional.html">Howard and TaxProf Paul Caron noted last week</a>, the NFL is fighting public disclosure of top league executive salaries (other than that of the commissioner). According to <a href="http://pubs.bna.com/ip/bna/der.nsf/eh/a0b6z0y7a8">an article published on BNA</a> today, the NFL will continue this effort. The article features comments by attorney Martin Gold (Covington & Burling), who explained:<br /><blockquote>"Discussions are ongoing to see if there is a consensus among parties in Congress who have taken an interest in this matter."</blockquote>

A Long, Long Sunday… Post Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2008 10:48:29 +0000
Sunday’s game was long – really long. On a sunny, hot day, the Yankees beat the Orioles, 8-7, to complete a three game sweep of the Orioles. To be quite honest, it was one of the longest, if not the longest nine-inning game I have ever had the luxury of sitting through. Both teams started out [...]

An Ugly Night… Post Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 19:12:26 +0000
Last night was painful. I went to the ballgame last night, and sitting where I was — it felt like I was at Yankee Stadium. I must have been one of seven or eight Oriole fans in my section, and by the ninth inning, the sound of Yankee nation was overwhelming that it was almost [...]

O, The Power; Baltimore Downs Boston, 11-6 Post Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 11:01:23 +0000
At the start of spring training, I surmised as to how the Orioles would score runs this year, much less win over 65 games. With the trade of Miguel Tejada was a little concerned about our bats; however, my concerns were perhaps greatly exaggerated. After losses on Monday and Tuesday with a pesky Red Sox [...]

Sherrill On the DL; Mickolio Called Up… Post Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 01:01:54 +0000
Uh, oh. Our closer is on the DL… The subject of George Sherrill going on the DL was the subject of debate amongst myself and a few of my fellow season ticket holders in our seats last on Monday.
