Bay's catch saves Sox Post Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2008 16:26:39 -0500
TORONTO - We're heading in the 11th inning in a 5-5 game. Jason Bay just made a nice leaping catch at the wall in left to rob Alex Rios of extra bases.
Brandon League is now pitching for the Jays.

Sox tie it Post Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2008 15:08:47 -0500
TORONTO - The good news is that Daisuke Matsuzaka only allowed one (intentional) walk over six innings. The bad news is the Jays scored two runs in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
Vernon Wells' double knocked in Alex Rios (single) with the tying run. With Wells on third and one out, the Sox ordered an intentional walk to Matt Stairs to pitch to Rod Barajas. Barajas pulled a 3-2 pitch down the third base line scoring Wells while Stairs was gunned down at the plate trying to score the second Jays' run.
The Sox came back against A.J. Burnett in the top of the seventh. Coco Crisp homered to lead off the inning.

Ellsbury injured on great catch Post Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2008 14:16:16 -0500
TORONTO - Jacoby Ellsbury made a great catch slamming up against the right field fence on Adam Lind's drive with one out in the fourth.
He came down hard and grabbed the right side of his face. Sox medical people ran out to right field to treat Ellsbury, who after an 8-minute delay, stayed in the game. The lapse in time, which had Toronto fans booing, saw Daisuke Matsuzaka throw several warm-up pitches to stay loose. After the delay, Lyle Overbay slammed a home run to right field, followed by a single by Matt Stairs.
It's 4-3 Toronto.
Let's watch A.J. Burnett, who is the type of pitcher who can suffer a momentary lapse as he did in the third inning when he gave up four runs and then settle down and shut you down. Burnett's throwing 96 mph.

Sox strike for four Post Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2008 14:00:39 -0500
TORONTO - Odd third inning inning for A.J. Burnett, who looked unhittable in the first.
He walked two batters - Alex Cora and Coco Crisp - with one out, and after the second out, he started leaving balls too far over the plate. Dustin Pedroia made him pay for the walks hitting a first-pitch fastball over the left-field fence, his 14th homer. Big Papi followed with a double to right field and Kevin Youkilis singled him in.
Sox lead 4-2 in the bottom of the third.

Wells red hot Post Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2008 13:23:01 -0500
TORONTO - Vernon Wells is feasting on Boston pitching.
In the bottom of the first against Daisuke Matsuzaka, he stroked a home run to left field with Marco Scutaro aboard. It's 2-0 Jays.
The roof is closed at Rogers Centre today in anticipation of rain. A.J. Burnett, who has a 4-0, 1.98 career mark against the Sox, retired the side in order in the first, striking out two.
If you're wondering about Sean Casey's whereabouts, he's been dealing with a stiff neck for the last couple of days.

News, notes and lineups Post Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2008 10:52:49 -0500
TORONTO - Welcome from Rogers Centre, where currently the dome roof is closed (normally open by now) with a threat of rain in the area.
Not much happening this morning. The players had their fantasy football draft last night. Montro was at the team hotel giving haircuts. Otherwise, Terry Francona seemed to have his hands full trying to figure out how to deal with all of his recent injuries.
Francona indicated that he hadn't yet seen J.D. Drew, but that the rightfielder seemed to be walking "crooked" out of the clubhouse following the Sox' 11-0 loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday. Francona did not rule out a stint on the DL for Drew, but with an off-day coming up tomorrow before Boston's final three-game set (maybe ever, barring a playoff game) at Yankee Stadium, Francona was hoping to see if the time would improve the spasms Drew is experiencing in his lower back.
David Pauley arrived this morning and will be in the Sox bullpen with David Aardsma back to Boston for tests on his right groin. Julio Lugo is also back there to get an MRI on his strained left quad.
Some interesting facts from the Bill Chuck files:
Daisuke Matsuzaka (15-2) has started 22 games this season and has a 2.77 ERA.
He is 8-2 at home with a 3.28 ERA.
He is 7-0 on the road with 2.17 ERA.
He has given up only 97 hits, but has walked 77. He has struck out 109.
He has hit 5 batters.
His WHIP is 1.37.
He has made 11 quality starts.
He averages 4.05 pitches per batter.
He averages 17.4 pitches per inning.
He has pitched 126.2 innings. He is averaging only 5.73 innings per start.
Bob Grim holds the record for 20 game winners with only 199 innings pitched when he won 20 in 1954. Pedro Martinez threw 199.1 and won 20 in 2002
He has surrendered 8 homers this season.
Batters are 0-14 against him with the bases loaded.
Righties are hitting .198 against him.
Lefties are hitting .227 against him.
He is 4-0 in August with a 1.73 ERA.
He has only faced 41 batters this season from the 7th inning on.
In 14 games this season he has thrown 101+ pitches.
He is 5-1 in day games with a 3.38 ERA.

Yaz still recovering Post Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 15:56:02 -0500
TORONTO - Just got off the phone with Carl Yastrzemski's agent, Dick Gordon, who indicated there's no news on Yaz, other than he's still recovering at Mass General Hospital.
"We haven't heard about a day for his release, but we're looking forward to it," Gordon said.
Gordon said Yaz seemed to be in good spirits and recovering from a triple bypass last Tuesday. Yaz turned 69 years old on Friday, but Gordon said there are plans for a birthday party for Yaz once he leaves the hospital.

Just one of those days Post Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 15:19:33 -0500
TORONTO - Just one of those terrible days for the Red Sox.
On a pristine day here at Rogers Centre, the Sox pitching has been complete chaos. Starter Jon Lester lasted 2-1/3 innings, eight hits, seven runs and Chris Smith didn't fare much better - four runs so far here in the fifth. Mike Timlin, who makes his 1,050th appearance, tying him for 7th all-time with Kent Tekulve, has come on to pitch.
The Sox haven't been able to handle Vernon Wells, who has hit two homers, Lyle Overbay, who has knocked in three runs, or Kevin Mench, who has three hits.
With Daisuke Matsuzaka pitching tomorrow, might be a long weekend for the Sox pen.
It's 11-0 Toronto in the sixth.

A few things.... Post Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 13:59:00 -0500
TORONTO - The Red Sox would love to add another outfielder to the mix with J.D. Drew's back problems of concern. But there doesn't seem to be anyone out there they can get their hands on that they feel would add anything of substance to their team.
The feeling right now, subject to a further setback, is that Drew should be OK in a few days when the back spasms subside. The Sox wanted Brian Giles, but he exercised his no-trade clause so he can continue his lifestyle in San Diego.
If Giles ever had a change of heart, the Padres would have to wait 30 days (from July 31), then put him on irrevocable waivers. He would have to get to the Sox on waivers, and then approve the assignment. Fat chance.
It wasn't what the Blue Jays had hoped to do at this time of the year because Shaun Marcum has been one of their best starters. But not lately. So today the team sent Marcum, who was drilled for five runs against the Sox Friday night, back to Triple-A.
Marcum hasn't been able to locate his pitches well over the past month and so he'll go back to Triple-A to work thing out there rather than trying to work them out here while the Blue Jays are trying to get themselves in wild card position.
The Jays brought up John Parrish, who will be inserted into the rotation.
It's not Jon Lester's day. After allowing six runs on eight hits in the third inning, he departed for Chris Smith. Lester was missing with his pitches from the start of the game. Jose Bautista drove in a run in the second inning with a sac fly after DH Kevin Mench doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third. In the third, an Alex Cora throwing error didn't help him out, but the Jays have struck for three runs, including a pair of run-producing doubles by Overbay and Mench. After No. 9 hitter John McDonald singled, Francona came out to get his pitcher.
Marco Scutaro's sac fly off Smith has made it 7-0 Jays.

Tale of two firsts Post Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 13:35:03 -0500
TORONTO - Jon Lester surrendered a two-run homer to Vernon Wells in the first inning, while Boston's offense stranded two runners with one out in the top half of the first inning.
Wells' homer hit the second deck in left field. Lester had retired the first two batters before allowing a single to center to Alex Rios. Wells then struck the long homer. Lester also walked a batter and hit a batter before striking out Lyle Overbay to end the inning.
It's 2-0 Jays in the second.
